6 New Things Curly Girls Need To Know

Less Is More

There are several products on the market made to target curly hairstyles, but that doesn’t mean you should be layering them all on. According to Morgan Willhite, Creative Director at Ouidad, “Less is more because product build-up can cause hair to look lack luster.” He recommends products that are easy to rinse out, like Ouidad Shine Glaze Serum ($ 20,, for days when you don’t have much styling time on your hands.

Determine Your Curl Type

Willhite suggests that women with loose curls, like Emmy Rossum, wash their hair 2 to 3 times per week, tight curls should be washed 1 to 2 times per week, and kinky curls only need to be washed once a week. Joico Smooth Cure Shampoo ($ 11.95, is great for curly girls, since it’s sulphate-free, which means it gently cleanses and reduces frizz.

Condition Every Day

According to Morgan Willhite, curls can lack nutrients, especially when they are dry and weather-damaged. Use a leave-in conditioner, like Ouidad’s Moisture Lock ($ 22, or L’Oreal’s EverCréme Nourishing Leave-In Spray ($ 7.74, These products will keep curls healthy, but are light-weight, so they won’t weigh hair down.

Use The “Rake And Shake” Method

To get curls that are well-defined, Willhite suggests the “Rake and Shake” Method. After washing hair, squeeze out the excess water and blot with a towel. Divide hair into four sections, and apply a curl-defining product, like Amika’s Curl Defining Cream ($ 26.65, or Matrix’s Curl Super Defrizzer Gel ($ 16,, with your fingers. When you get to the ends of each section, gently shake your hair back and forth to create a curl movement. Once you have finished doing this to each section, allow the hair to air-dry or use a diffuser.

Hands Off!

When you constantly have your hands in your curls, you are disturbing the natural pattern and causing frizz. Avoid touching your hair when drying it by using a diffuser, like DevaFuser ($ 23.95, Although this diffuser may look like some sort of alien hand, it is actually pretty genius and helps keep curls intact.

Play With Your Look

If you’re not in the mood for a tight curl, then try a more casual wave, like Kate Hudson. You can use a texturizing spray, like Sachajuan’s Ocean Mist ($ 24,, to get the just-spent-a-day-on-the-beach look. Spray into wet or dry hair, and scrunch upward.

Go Out!

According to Dr. Helen Fisher, who works with, there are 96 million single people in the U.S. So, get out there; don’t stay home! Want to feel like your most confident self? “Do flirty gestures like swishing your hair, don’t slouch and smile,” says Dr. Fisher. “When you smile, people naturally mimic you, which triggers a release of dopamine (the feel-good hormone) in the brain.”

Having Trouble Getting Going?

It may be a couple’s holiday, but bars are packed with other singles hoping to meet someone on the day of love. To get yourself out the door, Dr. Fisher suggests creating a feel-good saying to repeat to yourself that starts with “I love being myself with…” and then completing the sentence with something about yourself you love. Men are attracted to self-confident women. Make yourself feel even sexier by buying a new red lipstick, like Kendall Jenner!

Girls’ Night Out

Live it up like Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift! Want to increase your odds of meeting someone? “When you go out with your girlfriends, it’s less likely you’ll meet someone when you’re in a big group of women. It’s very intimidating to guys; if you really want to meet somebody go out with one girlfriend, or just a couple,” Susan and Jennifer from advise.

Hook Him Hair

Want to look sexy, fierce and be the center of attention wherever you go? Celebrity stylist Ted Gibson says to go for long hair a la Kim Kardashian, or a high-volume hairstyle. “If your hair doesn’t have any length or volume, go for clip-in extensions that can give your hair the sex appeal you’ve been looking for.”

Stay Bigger & Sexier For Longer

“Always have a travel sized hairspray in your bag for touchups to ensure your hair doesn’t lose its luster throughout the night,” Ted Gibson says. “Half up half down is perfect for the night. This style gets hair out of your face and still looks romantic and sexy.”

Put Your Best Face Forward

According to Mally Roncal of Mally Beauty, you can’t go wrong with a seductive smoky eye like the makeup Angelina Jolie wore to the SAG Awards. After all, “What man can resist a girl with come-hither eye makeup?” Remember to always use a shadow base to make sure everything stays where you put it. Using a thick eyeshadow stick is the secret to an easy, but still sexy smoky eye.

Switch Up Your Smoky Eye

Mally Roncal suggests using a shimmery plum for your Valentine’s Day smoky eye, like Carey Mulligan. Draw the plum shadow stick along your lash lines, then blend it just past the crease with your finger. Line your roots again and carefully smudge the line around your lower lashes. Use a black waterproof pencil on the bottom inner rim of the eye, and finish it off with a volumizing mascara.

Morning-After Makeup

If your hot hairstyle and sultry eye makeup snared you a guest spot in someone else’s bed for the night, be prepared for the trip home. Last night’s eyeliner probably looks more crusty than cute the next day. “My Evercolor Shadow Sticks won’t take up a lot of room in your purse and you can use them to blend together any leftover eye make-up in the AM,” Mally Roncal advises. Put on another coat of mascara and some concealer and you’ll be good to go.

How To Make It Last

Say you meet a hot guy while out on Valentine’s Day but worry that it won’t last because of the high-pressure, overly-romanticized day on which the two of you met. Susan and Jennifer from ZGoddess have the following advice: “When it goes up really fast, it can go down really fast, so pace yourself. Think of it this way: You went out and met somebody on a night when you weren’t supposed to. So you can apply that to another night.”

Create A Zen Den

Feel like having a calm night in this V-Day? Zen and spa guru Ole Henrikson suggests turning your bathroom into an at-home spa. “Soft music, aromatic candles and a single rose in a pretty vase, will set the tone for a distinct experience. This type of setting allows for complete relaxation and de-stressing.” Even if you’re going out, take a few moments to zen out first!

Indulge Yourself

Maximize your pampering with Ole Henrikson’s at-home skin inhalation therapy: “Start by filling your bathroom sink 1/3 of the way with warm water and add 15 drops of eucalyptus or lavender oil. Drench a terry face cloth and place it on your face for approximately 30 seconds, repeating five times. This will mimic the steaming process during a spa facial.”

Girl’s Guide To The Super Bowl

The Breakdown

Who: New England Patriots vs New York Giants
Where: Indianapolis, IN
When: Kick-off is at 6:30 EST
Why it’s important: It’s a rematch. The Pats were on a hot streak when they won 3 Super Bowls in 4 years (2001-2005) and became the eighth team in NFL history to win two consecutive championships until the Giants defeated them in 2008.

The New England Patriots

Quarterback: Tom Brady became the youngest QB to win three Super Bowls at the age of 28. Originally overlooked in the first rounds of the draft, Brady emerged as one of the best QBs of all time, making for quite the Cinderella story. He’s married to supermodel Gisele Bundchen, and not hard on the eyes himself.
Coach: Bill Belichick has brought the Pats to the Super Bowl 5 times in his 11 years as head coach. A scandal known as “spygate” left a mark on his legendary record when in 2007 he got the Pats fined for taping another team’s practice.

The New York Giants

Quarterback: Eli Manning is the younger brother of Peyton Manning, quarterback of the Colts. After taking out the Patriots in 2008’s championship, he finally emerged from his brother’s shadow.
Coach: Tom Coughlin has coached the G-Men since 2004, and apprenticed with Hall of Fame NY Giants coach Bill Parcells. He earned the nickname “Colonel Coughlin” for his strict and meticulous coaching style.
Honorable Mention: Lawrence Tynes, the team’s kicker, saved the G-Men from Super Bowl elimination in 2008 and 2012 with game-ending field goals.

Super Bowl Styling

Do not go glam on game day. Take a note from Marissa Miller and stick to understated style, like a great fitting pair of jeans. We advise against sporting a football jersey- it’s overkill. Makeup artist Bruce Grayson recommends sticking with a daily moisturizer like Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream before perfecting skin’s appearance with a great foundation, mascara, and some lip gloss.

The Yellow Lines Aren’t Real

The best way to save yourself from embarrassment: knowing that the yellow and blue lines on the field are actually just on TV screens. The yellow line represents a first down, or the spot on the field that the offensive team must get the football to in four plays. The blue line, or line of scrimmage, is the divide that neither team can cross until the play has begun.

Flag On The Play

It’s a bad thing, like a penalty. Rule of thumb: if your man’s team gets a flag it calls for a “Oh, come on, ref!” But if the opposing team gets a flag, try belting “Good call!”

Drop A Hint

Fun girl fact: The Vince Lombardi trophy, awarded to the MVP (most valuable player) each year, is made exclusively by Tiffany & Co. Your guy is bound to be in a good mood if his QB scores the trophy, making it a great time to segue into a talk about bling.

Drink Beer

Not every girl likes beer. It tastes way worse than a white wine spritzer and makes you bloated, but on game day we drink beer. There’s nothing a guy dreads more than hearing one girl at the Super Bowl party ask for a cosmo.

Time Out

While a Super Bowl game can last for hours, there is actually only an average of 12 minutes of playing time in any given football game. The Wall Street Journal found that 56% of the telecast is devoted to replays! We bet you’re glad to have that beer now.

DVR The Voice

There are plenty of chick-tastic premieres after the Super Bowl, like the return of The Voice. And although you may be stoked to see Christina and the gang select another batch of aspiring singers, we guarantee your guy will feel differently.

Sultan of sleaze Joe Francis is threatening to sue Madonna if she performs her new song called “Girls Gone Wild” at the Super Bowl tomorrow. Yes, really.

Francis, creator of the infamous Girls Gone Wild franchise, in which he films drunk girls exposing themselves on spring break, is apparently dead serious.

He has issued a cease and desist letter claiming he will take legal action against Madonna if she sings that particular song at this weekend’s festivities.

The letter (sent to Madonna, NBC Universal and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell) from Francis’ Nevada lawyer David Houston, states that:

“[Francis] became aware of Madonna’s new track based on the presales of her new album MDNA, as the #1 song on the album is ‘Girls Gone Wild.'”

“Mr. Francis and Girls Gone Wild have worked tirelessly for an excess of two decades to build his brand and to protect his trademark Girls Gone Wild.”

“Girls Gone Wild’s trade identity and trademark are both extremely valuable assets which my client must protect vigorously,” the letter continues.

The letter claims Madonna has “violated Federal and State trademark laws by making unauthorized use of Mr. Francis’ trademark Girls Gone Wild.”

For what it’s worth, it looks like she wasn’t going to sing it anyway.

Madonna’s set list reportedly includes “Give Me All Your Luvin’,” “Ray of Light” and “Vogue,” along with “Music” and “Holiday.” No GGW action.

Houston tells E! News regarding the set list, “That would be a wise choice on her part.” Good luck getting it off the album and iTunes, though.
