Roland Martin Suspended By CNN For Offensive Tweets

Roland Martin may have been joking about Super Bowl-related topics with some off-color Tweets Sunday night, but his bosses at CNN definitely didn’t find it funny.

The political contributor has been suspended by the network after his remarks – most notably about David Beckham’s H&M underwear ad – were called homophobic.

Gay-rights powerhouse GLAAD pushed hard for CNN to fire Martin. That did not happen, but disciplinary sanctions were taken, and his return date is not clear.

In a statement, CNN said:

“[Martin’s] tweets were regrettable and offensive. Language that demeans is inconsistent with the values and culture of our organization, and is not tolerated.”

“We have been giving careful consideration to this matter, and Roland Martin will not be appearing on our air for the time being.”

Martin fired off the controversial tweet (above) during the Super Bowl.

In another, he wrote, “Who the hell was that New England Patriot they just showed in a head to toe pink suit? Oh, he needs a visit from #teamwhipdatass.”

Martin tried to backpedal by issuing an apology Monday.

“Based on several tweets I made on my Twitter feed on Super Bowl Sunday yesterday, I have been accused by members of the LGBT community of being supportive of violence against gays and lesbians and bullying,” he wrote.

“That is furthest from the truth, and I sincerely regret any offense my words caused.”

GLAAD, for one, seems satisfied, saying in a statement: “CNN today took a strong stand against anti-LGBT violence and language that demeans any community.”

“Yesterday, Martin also spoke out against anti-LGBT violence.”

“We at GLAAD look forward to hearing from CNN and Roland Martin to discuss how we can work together as allies and achieve our common goal of reducing anti-LGBT violence as well as the language that contributes to it.”

What do you think? Should Martin have been fired?

Exposed body parts from the Super Bowl continue to stir up controversy across the Internet.

With M.I.A.’s immature finger flip causing both NBC and the NFL to apologize, GLADD is now up in arms over comments made last night by CNN contributor Roland Martin.

While watching the Giants victory over the Patriots, Martin Tweeted the following in response to David Beckham’s underwear ad for H&M (below):

GLADD noticed and wrote back: “Advocates of gay bashing have no place at CNN,” to which Martin then replied:

“You’re clearly out of touch and clueless with what I tweeted. Way to assume, but you’re way off base.”

The gay rights organization has since sent around an online petition that pushes for to Martin be fired. It has collected approximately 2,000 signatures so far.

What do you think of Martin’s comments? Homophobic? Or just lame and unfunny? Should he be fired?

Katy Perry returned to Twitter for the first time since her split from Russell Brand, and while she didn’t address that directly, she made a few telling remarks.

The 27-year-old, who has been laying low since Russell filed for divorce, thanked her fans for their concern and well-wishes during a very difficult time.

“I am so grateful for all the love and support I’ve had from people around the world,” she Tweeted. “You guys have made my heart happy again.”

Her words for certain other figures in her life? A little less kind.

Katy, who was married a little over a year, lashed out at her parents last night for speaking publicly about her split from Russell – in church no less.

Keith and Mary Hudson, who are both Christian ministers, said that Katy’s divorce was a blessing in disguise, generating interest in their ministry.

Katy Tweeted last night that no one speaks for her … including her family. It seems she’s not happy with the comments they’ve been making.

“Concerning the gossip, I want to be clear that NO ONE speaks for me. Not a blog, magazine, ‘close sources’ or my family,” the singer wrote.

Mariah Carey has good news regarding her ailing husband.

Just a couple days after saying that Nick Cannon was in “a lot of pain” due what has been described as mild kidney failure, the singer updated fans today via another Tweet.

With a laptop, balloons and gorgeous wife by his side, things could be a lot worse for Nick Cannon.

“Nick is in stable condition with a good prognosis, hopefully he’ll be discharged within 2 days,” Carey wrote this afternoon, adding: “As always he’s laughing and in good spirits.”

She also included the following caption with the new photo, posted above: “Thank you everyone for all the love & concern.”
