6 New Things Curly Girls Need To Know

Less Is More

There are several products on the market made to target curly hairstyles, but that doesn’t mean you should be layering them all on. According to Morgan Willhite, Creative Director at Ouidad, “Less is more because product build-up can cause hair to look lack luster.” He recommends products that are easy to rinse out, like Ouidad Shine Glaze Serum ($ 20, amazon.com), for days when you don’t have much styling time on your hands.

Determine Your Curl Type

Willhite suggests that women with loose curls, like Emmy Rossum, wash their hair 2 to 3 times per week, tight curls should be washed 1 to 2 times per week, and kinky curls only need to be washed once a week. Joico Smooth Cure Shampoo ($ 11.95, amazon.com) is great for curly girls, since it’s sulphate-free, which means it gently cleanses and reduces frizz.

Condition Every Day

According to Morgan Willhite, curls can lack nutrients, especially when they are dry and weather-damaged. Use a leave-in conditioner, like Ouidad’s Moisture Lock ($ 22, amazon.com) or L’Oreal’s EverCréme Nourishing Leave-In Spray ($ 7.74, amazon.com). These products will keep curls healthy, but are light-weight, so they won’t weigh hair down.

Use The “Rake And Shake” Method

To get curls that are well-defined, Willhite suggests the “Rake and Shake” Method. After washing hair, squeeze out the excess water and blot with a towel. Divide hair into four sections, and apply a curl-defining product, like Amika’s Curl Defining Cream ($ 26.65, amazon.com) or Matrix’s Curl Super Defrizzer Gel ($ 16, amazon.com), with your fingers. When you get to the ends of each section, gently shake your hair back and forth to create a curl movement. Once you have finished doing this to each section, allow the hair to air-dry or use a diffuser.

Hands Off!

When you constantly have your hands in your curls, you are disturbing the natural pattern and causing frizz. Avoid touching your hair when drying it by using a diffuser, like DevaFuser ($ 23.95, HSN.com). Although this diffuser may look like some sort of alien hand, it is actually pretty genius and helps keep curls intact.

Play With Your Look

If you’re not in the mood for a tight curl, then try a more casual wave, like Kate Hudson. You can use a texturizing spray, like Sachajuan’s Ocean Mist ($ 24, amazon.com), to get the just-spent-a-day-on-the-beach look. Spray into wet or dry hair, and scrunch upward.

5 Things We Learned At Billboard’s Women In Music Event

Daily Makeover was lucky enough to be invited to Billboard’s Women in Music awards event, featuring Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj. Taylor was named Billboard’s Woman of the Year and Nicki was given the title of Billboard’s Rising Star. Not only was the Crest 3D White sponsored event loads of fun, but it turned out to be pretty informative. Here are just a few of the things we learned:

1. Nicki’s Attitude Comes From Her Hair

Nicki is no stranger to makeovers. In fact, she showed up on the runway sporting long blonde Rapunzel-like locks. During the awards ceremony she said, “I love changing my look. Hair changes my mood. When I put on pink, I feel euphoric.”

2. Taylor is sporting some new bangs.

Taylor told us that she had been thinking about cutting bangs before, and when someone suggested clip-in bangs for a photo shoot, she just went for it! “It’s fun to change up your look, and I never change it up.” She wore her hair straight for the event, but we’re interested to see how the bangs look with her curly hair.

3. Nicki Minaj eats humble pie.

Nicki has a larger-than-life persona (the clothes, the hair, her own Barbie coming out soon), so we were pleasantly surprised to see what a sweet, humble woman she is. During her acceptance speech, the rapper talked about the many doors that were slammed in her face when she tried to break into the music industry. “I’m no different from any other person, except that I gave it one last try.” She even shed a few tears during her acceptance speech, saying, “Even though they aren’t here, I know my fans will feel it when I say, Barbs, thank you so much!”

4. Taylor Swift really is that nice.

There are those that find Taylor’s gratitude and good manners to be merely an act. Turns out, that couldn’t be further from the truth. She makes eye contact with everyone she meets, she smiles and introduces herself (as if we didn’t know who she is!), and she continues to be thankful for the awards and support she’s given. Katie Couric even asked the starlet if she ever wants to rebel, and Taylor answered, “No. People always ask why they don’t see me falling down drunk at clubs. Because I don’t feel like it!”

5. Nicki’s changing some things up for her sophomore album.

After giving her acceptance speech, Nicki sat down with ABC’s Robin Roberts, who wanted to know about her upcoming album. “I can’t say too much, (but for this album) I just don’t care anymore. I’ve been trying to please everyone, but now I’m just having fun.”
